Geographic Information Systems at Downtown Los Angeles Campus

Program Description:
There is a growing interest in the economic and strategic value of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool that can benefit organizations of varying sizes representing diverse industries. GIS methodology not only allows users to visualize, but it also helps them to analyze and interpret data in order to understand relationships, patterns and trends. 

Offered at our Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) Campus, this academic credit program trains students in current theory and software technology in spatial analysis in the areas of urban planning, political science and environmental studies. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to create and modify maps, graphs, diagrams or other visual representations of geographic data, examine data from ground surveys, reports, aerial photographs and satellite images, prepare thematic maps in digital form for environmental and educational purposes, use programming languages such as python scripts to automate tasks related to data management, use GIS to collect, analyze and display geographic data and more.

Increasing use of geographic technologies and data will drive employment growth in this field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 29% increase in job opportunities within the next eight years.
