California Social Work Education Center (CalSWEC)
CalSWEC is a partnership between the schools of social work, public human service agencies and other
related professional organizations to facilitate the integration of education and practice and assure that
effective, culturally competent service is delivered to the people of California. Funded through Title IV-E
monies, CalSWEC provides financial support to MSW students in exchange for a commitment to work in a public
child welfare agency, within the State of California, for a minimum of one year for every year of support received.
Two Year Stipend Program: The CalSWEC IV-E stipend program provides for two years of support, at
$18,500 per year, for students enrolled in the Children, Youth, Women and Families (CYWF) concentration.
Three Year Stipend Program: Students eligible to apply for the part-time CalSWEC reimbursement
program must be employees of a County Child Welfare Service, County Departments of Social Services, or the
California Department of Social Services. All part-time applicants must provide a letter of support from their
agency administrator/director. Students participating in the program sign a contract to render one year of continuous
and satisfactory full-time employment in their home public child welfare agency for each year of IV-E education
support. Once contracted, the student receives full tuition and fees, costs for required books (up to $500 per semester),
and a travel allowance.

Mental Health Initiative Stipend Program (CalSWEC II)
CalSWEC II is a collaborative effort between Mental Health and the School of Social Work to move toward
a state-of-the-art, culturally competent system that promotes recovery/wellness for adults and seniors with
severe mental illness and for children with serious emotional disorders and their families. Funded through
the California Department of Mental Health with Proposition 63 monies, CalSWEC II provides financial support
to MSW students in exchange for a commitment to work in a county public mental health agency or a community
based organization under contract to a county public mental health agency in the state of California.
Stipends: The program provides a training stipend of $18,500 per year for
two year program students
who will be completing their 2nd year field placement.
Admissions: Students employed in public or private agencies must be on a full-time leave from
those agencies, and must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to mental health services as described in
the Mental Health Services Act.

Inter-University Consortium (IUC)
Department of Children and Family Services Training Project
The Inter-University Consortium Department of Children and Family Services (IUC/DCFS)
Training Project is a collaborative endeavor between the Los Angeles County Department of Children and
Family Services and the graduate programs of social work at CSULA, UCLA, USC and CSULB. Through specialized
Training Centers located at each university, the Training Project provides in-service training to newly-hired
social workers, case-carrying social workers, staff who support case management personnel, management staff,
and specialized pre-service for MSW students.
Stipends: The Training Project provides a stipend of $18,500 and specialized training at each
university to students who are placed at DCFS, receive specialized Child Welfare training as part of their
MSW course work, and commit to a year's employment at the department upon graduation.
How to Apply: To be considered for a stipend, you must be admitted to the MSW Program and to
the Children, Youth, Women and Families (CYWF) concentration. Complete the Application for Public Child Welfare Stipend Programs
included in the acceptance packet and return it with your Letter of Intent to the MSW Admissions Office by May.
Selected applicants will be invited to an oral interview conducted by an IUC/DCFS panel. The IUC Awards Committee
selects recipients. Students are notified in the summer.
For both CalSWEC and IUC, you must be able to pass a criminal background check.
If you are unable to successfully complete any of the program requirements, you must repay the stipend.

Geriatric Social Work Education Consortium (GSWEC)
The Southern California Geriatric Social Work Education Consortium (GSWEC) is the nation’s first major regional
consortium consisting of GSWEC-accredited graduate social work programs,
geriatric social work agencies and a variety of health and social aging service
providers. Funding for student stipends comes from private foundations with a
goal of creating a replicable and sustainable model for integrated field and
academic graduate geriatric social work education.
Stipends: Students are selected directly through GSWEC for $4,000 stipends. A primary field placement is
customized to students’ geriatric practice interests. A secondary case-based experience complements the continuum of
care and offers opportunities for specialized learning needs. Students receive competency-based training with
certificate upon program completion.
You must be able to pass a criminal background check to be eligible for a stipend.
If you are unable to successfully complete any of the program requirements, you must repay the stipend.

Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI)
OLLI at Cal State LA offers an exciting array of classes and special events for persons age 50+ to remain vibrant
in mind, body and spirit. OLLI mission is to promote "learning for joy and personal fulfillment" and embracing the
Cal State OLLI motto of Empowerment through Learning, members have enjoyed classes in literature, history, computers,
