SPECIAL RECOGNITION IN GRADUATE STUDIES
Award: Certificate and recognition during annual University Honors Convocation
Eligibility: Minimum 3.8 GPA in at least 80% of the required degree program.
Selection Criteria: Superior scholastic achievement, special recommendation by department.
Selection Procedure: Technical eligibility of students is determined by the department office staff under the supervision of the department's Student Affairs committee by the start of the 8 th week of each Fall Quarter. The department's Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends one or more nominees to the department faculty by the start of the 9 th week. The department faculty selects one or more recipients by the end of the 10 th week of Fall Quarter.
TED C. BRADBURY MEMORIAL AWARD IN THEORETICAL PHYSICS - Student application required
Award: $100 or as determined by the department
Eligibility: Undergraduate or unclassified graduate physics majors who have completed at least three upper division theoretical physics courses at CSULA. At the present time these classes are: 410 AB, 425 AB, 426 AB, 432 AB and 427. Students must have completed at least one of these classes during the four quarters prior to the award and not have graduated with a physics degree from CSULA.
Selection Criteria: Academic performance in the above listed courses only. Academic performance is assessed using grades and recommendations from the instructors of these courses.
Selection Procedure: Technical eligibility of students is determined by the department office staff during the start of the 3 rd week of each Winter quarter under the supervision of the department's Student Affairs committee. The department's Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends one or more nominees to the department faculty by the start of the 9 th week of Winter quarter. The department faculty selects a recipient by the end of the 10 th week.
ROLAND L. CARPENTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Student application or Faculty nomination required
Award : Up to $6,000 for the academic year to be used for academic expenses.
Description: Dr. Roland L. Carpenter came to California State University , Los Angeles in 1968 from a position as a research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He earned a BA degree in Psychology at then Los Angeles State College and an MA and PhD in Astronomy from UCLA. He came to the campus to establish the astronomy program. Dr. Carpenter was a very effective and popular teacher, and, for many years, mentored and supervised all the students, graduate and undergraduate, who were doing research in astronomy and astrophysics. Dr. Carpenter retired in 1994. This scholarship is offered to honor his many contributions to the Department of Physics and Astronomy by his wife, Dr. Dorothy L. Keane, Emeritus Professor of Education.
Eligibility : A CSULA upper division undergraduate or graduate physics major who is interested in astronomy or astrophysics. The amount of award will be based on the number of units taken by the student with a full time undergraduate taking 12 units or more per quarter and a full time graduate student taking 8 units or more per quarter.
Selection Criteria : The student should have an interest in pursuing a career in astronomy or astrophysics and the student's academic record should show potential for a successful career in one of these fields. The recipient must be enrolled at CSULA each of the three quarters of the academic year during the year of the award. In the event that a full time student is not available, the scholarship may be given to two part time students.
Selection Procedure : Students may apply for this scholarship or may be nominated by a faculty member. Students being considered should submit a completed Physics and Astronomy Department scholarship application which is available on the Department website; a description of their career objectives; and a name or names of faculty members who can serve as a reference. The Student Affairs Committee will interview applicants, in person or by telephone . The department faculty selects a recipient by the end of the 10 th week of Winter Quarter following nomination by the department's Student Affairs Committee. The award is made once each year, and is distributed each quarter to pay fees and other related expenses. A student may receive this award more than once.
LARRY CHU SCHOLARSHIP – Student application required
Award: $350 per quarter, up to 3 awards per year
Eligibility: The student applicant must be a declared physics major and must be registered for at least 6 units that are part of a physics degree major.

The department's Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends one or more nominees to the department faculty by the start of the 9 th week of Winter quarter. DEPARTMENT GRANT-IN-AID – Student application required. An application may be submitted every quarter.
Award: Up to $1,000 per quarter, up to 3 quarters per year
Eligibility: Student applicant must be a physics major in good standing and taking 4- 16 units in a physics degree program (award varies with the number of units taken), and the student must be making progress toward a physics degree.
Selection Criteria: As determined by the department's Student Affairs Committee

LESTER HIRSCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Student application required
Award: $500
Eligibility: A CSULA undergraduate physics major
Selection Criteria: The recipient must have a stated career goal of teaching Physics at the high school or undergraduate level. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average (A = 4.0). The student must be matriculated at CSULA with at least 5 units of load for the quarter the award is made.

MARGAZIOTIS STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD - Faculty Nomination required
Award: $500 and certificate presented at the annual Honors Convocation
Eligibility: A CSULA undergraduate or graduate student (need not be a physics major) who has participated in a research project under the mentorship of a physics faculty member for at least two quarters.
Selection Criteria: Outstanding performance or potential in research
Selection Procedure: Each faculty mentor nominates one student during a regular Physics & Astronomy department meeting and will provide a one-page description written by the student nominee of their research work. The award is made once each year. A student may receive this award more than once. The department faculty selects a recipient by the end of the 10 th week of Winter quarter following nomination by the department's Student Affairs Committee.
KEITH MILLER SCHOLARSHIP - Student application required
Award: $2000 per year, up to 2 awards per year
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate physics majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall
Selection Criteria: Academic performance
Selection Procedure: Technical eligibility of students is determined by the department office staff during the start of the 3rd week of each Winter quarter (exception: the 8th week of the 2008 winter quarter) under the supervision of the department's Student Affairs committee. The department's Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends two or more nominees to the department faculty by the start of the 9 th week of Winter quarter. The department faculty select two recipients by the end of the 10 th week.
JOHN MUNGER SCHOLARSHIP – Student application required
Award: $500
Eligibility: The student applicant must be a physics major, upper division standing, with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Selection Criteria: Academic performance based on grades.
Selection Procedure: Technical eligibility of students is determined by the department office staff during the start of the 3 rd week of each Winter quarter under the supervision of the department's Student Affairs committee. The Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends one or more nominees to the donor by the start of the 7 th week of Winter quarter. The donor selects a recipient by the end of the 10 th week.
FRIEDA STAHL FELLOWSHIP FOR OUTSTANDING TEACHING - Student application required
Award: $100
Eligibility: Graduate students who are physics majors, have completed at least two quarters of teaching as graduate assistants in the department and have taught a minimum of four courses at the time of nomination.
Selection Criteria: Teaching performance in CSULA physics/astronomy courses or labs.
Selection Procedure: Technical eligibility of students is determined by the department office staff during the start of the 3 rd week of each Winter quarter under the supervision of the department's Student Affairs committee. The Student Affairs committee evaluates eligible students and recommends one or more nominees to the department faculty by the start of the 9 th week of Winter quarter.
