Part-Time Teaching Positions in Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy accepts applications for temporary positions ("lecturers") at any time. Lecturers typically teach lower- or upper-division General Education courses; occasionally more specialized major courses are available when a regular faculty member is on leave. Lower-division courses include introductory courses on knowledge and reality, human values, the meaning of life, critical thinking, introductory symbolic logic, and multicultural contemporary moral and social issues.

At the upper-division, GE courses are clustered into topical "themes" in which students take three classes. Philosophy has courses on emotions, gender, race, violence, post-colonial values in the developing world, issues of "adult life," and "ancients and moderns." Because two of the courses include a science component (Phil 380 and 385), be sure to note if you have relevant science or history of science background. Sometimes other applied ethics courses are available, for example, bioethics and environmental ethics.

Please look at the description of our courses at http://catalog.calstatela.edu (scroll down to Philosophy from the index). Present and future schedules are available at: www.calstatela.edu/dept/schedules.htm.

Applicants should send a letter of interest that includes the courses one can and would like to teach, a C.V., and evidence of good teaching. The first two, if brief, may be sent by email. If applicants have a full placement file readily available, it is fine to send the entire file (by post only). In order to be hired, applicants must also submit three signed letters of recommendation and an official transcript.
