| Registration
Requirement (VERY IMPORTANT) |
| University policy requires that all
students using any services of the Department be currently
registered. This policy prohibits students who are not
registered for a given quarter from using any Department equipment
or laboratories or participating in any type of field activity with
the faculty during that quarter. |
| |
| Writing
Proficiency Requirement |
| All students admitted to graduate programs
in the College of Natural and Social Sciences who have not passed the
Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) at a California Sate University before
the beginning of their graduate studies must take this exam in their
first quarter of residence as postbaccalaureate students and must
pass the WPE prior to the end of their second quarter of residence. Students who do not take the exam during
their first quarter of residence or who do not pass the exam before
the end of their second quarter of residence will be suspended from
further work on their program until they pass the WPE. Advancement
to candidacy is not possible until a student passes the WPE. |
| |
| No Cal State L. A. courses, writing projects,
or transfer courses may be substituted for the WPE. Credit for the
WPE may be transferred from another CSU providing proof of success
is on the transcript. |
| |
| Graduate students readmitted to graduate
programs after a break in residence who have not passed the WPE must
pass this exam in their first quarter of residence after readmission
to the program or they will be suspended from further work on their
program until they have passed the exam. |
| |
| Students register for the WPE by enrolling
during registration in a section of University (UNIV) 400 and may
enroll in only one section in any quarter. The $15 exam fee must be
paid with registration fees. |
| |
| Students should be aware that
the WPE is moderately difficult. The Writing Center at the Learning
Resource Center provides counseling for the WPE for those who desire
it. Cliffs Notes publishes a book entitled Writing Proficiency
Examination Preparation Guide is available in the Bookstore. Review
of a writing text such as The Elements of Style by Strunk and
White is recommended. |
