| Special
Action Admission |
| Applicants
who were in good standing at the last college attended, but do not
have the University-required minimum 2.5 GPA may petition for
admission by special action.
These applicants must present academic records, professional
records, and other evidence that indicates potential for success in
the program.
This may include Graduate Record Examination scores, letters
from employers and faculty documenting professional motivation.
Students applying for special action admission must have
satisfied the Cal State L.A. Writing Proficiency Examination prior
to submitting an application for special action admission.
The applicant's request is reviewed by the Department
admissions committee, the College graduate studies subcommittee, and
the College dean.
Applications must reach the School graduate studies
subcommittee no later than the eighth week of the quarter preceding
the quarter for which admission is desired.
All students admitted by special action must complete a
16-unit conditional program with a 3.0 minimum GPA before
advancement to classified standing. |

| Make-Up Program |
| Students
enter a make-up program if they are qualified for admission
to the University but lack either an appropriate BS degree or have
coursework deficiencies. Each MS degree option has a specific
make-up program.
Make-up
courses may NOT be used as part of the master's degree program.
In some cases up to 13 units of 400-level Geology elective
courses may be used for the MS degree program with the prior
approval of the graduate adviser and the College dean.
Make-up students must make an appointment with the graduate
adviser before taking 400-level elective courses.

| Advisement |
| Graduate students must meet with the
Department graduate advisor to develop a M.S. program that will
satisfy their career goals. Please contact the advisor who is
appropriate to your career goal in hydrogeology geology, engineering
geology, or geology. Students should continue to meet with the graduate
advisor on a quarterly basis to make sure everything is in order.
It is the student's responsibility to request advisement and to be
certain that the appropriate paperwork required for satisfactory progress
is submitted to the School graduate studies office. Either call the
Geological
Sciences Office (323) 343-2400) to make an appointment with the graduate advisor
or contact the appropriate adviser listed below.
