Geological Science and Natural Science are rewarding careers for students who enjoy nature and science and who wish to combine these loves with a career that benefits the needs of humanity and our environment. The Department of Geological Sciences provides training for those seeking careers as professional geologists or geoscience teachers. Students wishing to be professional geologists earn Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. Undergraduate students develop a broad background in science and receive extensive field training. Graduate students concentrate in numerous fields of geology including engineering geology and hydrogeology. Future geoscience teachers earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Science and simultaneously satisfy the requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science. These students develop a broad background in physical and biological science through an interdisciplinary program with other departments at Cal State LA.Program graduates are in demand as engineering geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental geologists, and teachers. Some find employment with government agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey. Many have successfully completed doctoral programs.
