Student Organizations
The Communication Disorders Department at California State University, Los
Angeles (CSULA) maintains a very active local chapter of the National Student
Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). This group is open to any student
interested in communication disorders or related fields (e.g., special
education, social work, counseling).
The purpose of our local NSSLHA chapter is to promote professional growth, to
discuss current events and career possibilities pertaining to the field of
Communication Disorders or related areas, to promote greater fellowship among
all students pursuing careers in speech-language pathology, and to involve
students in community events and activities related to the discipline.
The local NSSLHA chapter maintains a website, publishes a bi-monthly newsletter,
hosts monthly meetings and participates in community activities.
Monthly meetings are held September – June, on the first Monday of each month.
Each meeting has a unique theme designed to enhance classroom learning. Recent
guest speakers have included Dr. Arlene Pietranton, Executive Director of ASHA;
representatives from Casa Colina; the mother of a child with autism; and a
volunteer for Operation Smile. Meetings also provide a forum for students to ask
questions about programs available in the Communication Disorders Department and
NSSLHA events.
Elections are held each November for 12-month terms. Positions available are
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, and
Undergraduate Representative. All positions are held by graduate students, with
the exception of the Undergraduate Representative. Officers commit to planning
and participating in monthly meetings, organizing events, and representing the
department and local chapter in a professional manner at all times.
