Research Opportunities

The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department at Cal State LA has a strong tradition of involving undergraduate students in research projects. Student research is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member, and provides an excellent way to study advanced topics in chemistry and biochemistry, to learn experimental techniques and to participate in the scientific investigation of an interesting topic. There are a number of ways in which students may become involved:
Chem 499 - Requires a 2.5 GPA in chemistry courses or one advanced laboratory course elective, and the consent of instructor to act as sponsor. An enrollment form is available in the department office.
Honors Program (Chem 196 and 396). Entry into this research program requires a 3.0 GPA in all college work and in chemistry, averaged separately, and recommendations from at least two faculty members. Honors students must write a thesis based on their research and pass an oral examination relating to their project. Students who complete this program graduate with departmental honors. See Dr. Nickolaisen (P. S. 621 or 827) for details.
CEA-CREST (Pronounced "sea crest") offers students exciting opportunities for focused and interdisciplinary research in the environmental sciences. Promising students in their undergraduate and graduate studies, are supported. Student training will be enhanced through participation in the center research teams, the interdisciplinary curriculum, and the university accredited internships with off-campus agencies. Teams of senior scientists from biology, chemistry, and geography advise student collaborators in four emphasis areas:
1 Natural and altered dynamics of intertidal marine communities
2 Ecophysiology and fire ecology of evergreen-dominated ecosystems
3 Chemistry of air pollution and its impact on neighborhoods
4 Application of molecular techniques to population studies
See Dr. Nickolaisen (PS 621 or PS 827) for details.
Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program. Provides research opportunities and financial support for minority students. For details see Dr. Gutierrez (P. S. 603) or Ms. Bautista (Program office, PS 628).
Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program. Provides fellowships and research opportunities for minority honors students. Requires a GPA of 3.0, both in the major and overall. See Dr. Gutierrez (PS 603) for details.
NASA/JPL Chemistry Outreach Program has established a collaboration between CSULA and JPL for students interested in research careers in Atmospheric Chemistry. The program allows students to conduct research at both institutions while completing their degree at CSULA. Students are also recruited from local community colleges for a summer research experience at CSULA. See Dr. Nickolaisen (PS 621 or PS 827) for details.
Research Improvement in Minority Institutions (RIMI) Program. Provides research opportunities in NMR spectroscopy and financial support for minority students. See Dr. Fratiello (PS 620) for details.
Other research grants. Consult individual faculty members about the availability of financial support for students involved in their research programs.

Support Groups

Several groups and programs offer free tutoring and/or career counseling. Among these are:
Chemistry & Biochemistry Club. This Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society has various activities that may include study groups, sharing of notes, free tutoring, visits to industry, career information, and information about graduate schools. Faculty sponsor, Dr. Garcia and Dr. McCurdy.
ACCESS - MSP. Offers tutoring and advisement for minority students taking freshmen science courses. See Drs. Jefferson (BS 210) or Garcia (PS 516).
Health Science Advisement Office and HCOP (BioSci 202). Career counseling and other services for students interested in careers in medicine or other health-related fields. The HCOP program addresses needs of minority students in these areas.

Cooperative Education

It is possible to obtain course credit applicable to the major (counted in the elective block) for an appropriate work experience through the Cooperative Education program. For details about this program and a listing of job opportunities see Dr. Grover, the department's Cooperative Education coordinator.
