REGALIA AND GUEST SERVICES

REGALIA FOR GRADUATING CANDIDATES

Graduating candidates participating in the Commencement ceremonies must wear the appropriate academic regalia.

BACHELOR'S DEGREE REGALIA

Bachelor's Degree RegaliaFor bachelor's degree, candidates wear a black bachelor's degree gown (bell shaped sleeves), black cap (mortarboard) with a black tassel.

How to wear it? The tassel is worn on the right side. At the end of the ceremony, the tassel is changed from the right to the left after the degree is conferred by President William A. Covino.

MASTER'S DEGREE REGALIA

Master's Degree Regalia

For master's degree, candidates wear a black master's degree gown (longer closed sleeves), black cap (mortarboard) with a black tassel, and a master's hood designated with their academic major or discipline.

How to wear it? The tassel is worn on the left side. Master's degree candidates do not wear their hood until after the hooding ceremony. When candidates check-in, the hood should be draped on the left arm with the velvet hood trim on the outside closer to the hand. Hoods have a button and cord inside; they should not be clasped. This will slow down the hooding process and/or prevent the faculty from hooding the candidate properly.

When it is the candidate's turn to be hooded on stage, the left arm should be extended so the faculty can get the hood. Once the hood is taken, the candidate should step in front of the hooding faculty, face the audience, and kneel slightly. This allows the faculty to hood properly, and prevent the cap from being accidentally removed.

DOCTORAL DEGREE REGALIA

Doctoral Degrees Regalia

For doctoral degree, candidates wear a black doctoral degree robe (with three black velvet bands on each sleeve and black velvet running down the middle front), black tam with a gold tassel, and a doctoral hood designated with their academic major or discipline.

How to wear it? The tassel is worn on the left side. Doctoral degree candidates do not wear their hood until after the hooding ceremony.

This allows the faculty to hood properly, and prevent the tam from being accidentally removed.
