During Fall 2015, Cal State LA launched several new Flexible Learning Classroom spaces (FLeC-spaces).  FLeC-spaces are designed to encourage active learning, small group activies, and increase faculty and student engagement.  Currently, there are 3 "low-tech" FLeC-spaces and 3 Technology Enhanced FLeC-spaces (aka T-FLeC-spaces).  Cal State LA faculty can apply to teach in a T-FLeC-space each term.  Priority is given to faculty who have participated in CETL's 2-day Active Learning Workshop, or comparable faculty development programming.  All T-FLeC-space faculty must attend a 1 hour technical training prior to their first day of instruction in the space.  For more information on the FLeC-spaces, please contact Beverly Bondad-Brown (bbondad@calstatela.edu). 


Each "low-tech" FLeC-space features an instructor station with PC and doc cam, projector, and flexible furnishings.  The Salazar Hall rooms have IdeaPaint where faculty and students can use dry erase markers on any wall.

Each T-FLeC-space features an instructor station with touch control panel, flat panel displays with integrated PCs at each table, and 3 moveable whiteboards in the room.  These rooms have 6-7 small group tables and generally accommodate up to 50 students.

Training and Support

CETL offers a 2-day Active Learning workshop each term.  Workshop topics include: opportunities and challenges of teaching in a FLeC-space; examples of high-, low-, and no-technology tools; and a demonstration of a myriad of small group activities. Many of these activities can be incorporated in almost any classroom (high- or low-tech).

All faculty teaching in a FLeC-space must attend a 1-hour technical training session prior to their first day of instruction.  Faculty must also agree to the terms in the FLeC-space Agreement Form while teaching in the FLeC-space.

I sent the instructor PC to stations but they don’t appear.

Hide All Button on Touch Panel

Please make sure that the Hide All appears dark, if the button is yellow it means the displays are hidden and need to be shown in order to work.

I am unable to hear sound from my microphone/computer.

Mute Button on Touch Panel

Please make sure the microphone is turned on and that sound from the source is not muted, for example the YouTube video sound is on as well as the Windows sound is also enabled. Also make sure that on the media selector the mute icon is grey, if it is yellow sound will be muted. If you verified that sound should be on, try switching between another source and the source for the sound, this usually fixes most issues.

The projector is flashing, and won’t turn on.

If the projector is flashing it means that it is cooling and cannot be turned on yet. Please wait until the flashing stops and then attempt to send a source to it again.

The presentation remote is not working.

Please make sure that the USB antenna is plugged in and that the remote is powered on.

Where do I plug in my flash drive?

There are 2 USB ports on the front of the computer and 2 additional ones along the side.

How do I show a DVD?

On the side of the computer there is a CD tray where you can load the DVD and then use the computer to play it. You may have to double click on the DVD from My Computer.

A mouse/keyboard/microphone ran out of battery.

If something runs out of battery, we store some backup batteries in each room. If you look below the instructor station you will find a ziplock bag with AA, AAA, and 9-Volt batteries. Please use the appropiate battery and leave the empty batteries to the side. If the room is running low or is out of batteries please contact us to inform us.

I am still having additional problems, who can I contact?

Below each instructor station there is a list where you can write problems along with information on time and station #, please fill this out so that we can better track issues. You can contact us here for problems about displaying stations, hearing sound, or if the microphone is not working.
