Restructure Course & Content

Overview

The ease of use makes Moodle user friendly.  You can change section titles on the fly, drag and drop items on your course front page, add additional features, and do so much more. This guide will provide instructions on how easy it is to accomplish these tasks.

Your Moodle course can be organized by weekly or topical section headings, which you can change to fit your needs and to personalize your course. Examples include:

  • Week 1, Week 2, Week 3…

Displaying one Section per page

  2. Click on Gear menu on the top right of your course.
  3. Click Edit Settings, located in the dropdown menu.

Moving Sections or Content in your course

Moodle allows you to customize your course page. One way to do this, is to move sections, activities, and resources to different locations. For example, you may create a Quiz to the Week 5 area, but decide you want it located in Week 6. You can simply move the quiz to a different location instead of creating it again. This can be done for any content on your course, such as topics, blocks, files, and assignments.

Follow the directions below to move content on your course page:

  1. Log in to your course
  2. Click on Gear menu on the top right of your course.
  3. Click Turn editing on, located in the dropdown menu.
  4. Find the content you wish to move.
  5. Find the cross hair icon of the topic/activity that you want to move:
    • For a topic, the icon is in the upper left corner.
    • For an activity, the icon is directly in front of the activity’s name.
  6. Click and Drag your topic / activity to the desired location. Make sure you see the content in the appropiate location before releasing your click.

Useful Blocks to Add to Your Course

CETL recommends adding the following blocks to your course: Upcoming events, Calendar, and Navigation. These blocks all serve students as a useful means of keeping track of the assignments and events that you hold in your course.
  • The Upcoming Events block allows students to view all the events your hold in your course. These events are generated based on your activities and quizzes and will hold information such as due dates or quiz dates.
  • The Calendar block is a great tool in Moodle for visual students. Adding the calendar allows students to see when any assignment or event on Moodle is due. It also coordinates with other classes to allow students to see everything that is due or upcoming.
  • The Navigation block is on by default when you are assigned a course. If for some reason you cannot find it you can always add it in using the same methods as above and below these instructions.
    • The Navigation block is useful in directing you and your students to course content held in each section/topic. It also allows you to view your list of student participants and send them Moodle messages.

You can use these instructions to add any one of the blocks listed above and more. As an example follow the instructions below to enable the Calendar block:

  1. Log into your course.
  2. Click on Gear menu on the top right of your course.
  3. Click Turn editing on, located in the dropdown menu.
