EPT and ELM
The English Placement Test (EPT) is designed
for entering lower-division students to:
- Assess reading and writing skill levels
- Provide appropriate course placement to help
attain needed reading and writing skills
- Allow students to enroll in courses
The EPT is $18.00, nonrefundable, and can be taken
only once.
The Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) is also
designed for entering lower-division students to:
- Assess mathematics skill level
- Provide appropriate course placement to help
attain needed mathematics skills
- Allow students to enroll in courses
The ELM is $18.00, nonrefundable, and can be
retaken once every scheduled test date.
Both tests are administered in accordance with the
Chancellor’s Office system-wide schedule of examinations (See Master
Calendar Test dates).

NOTE: The CSU system requires all non-exempt EPT
and ELM students to take these exams prior to enrollment, and
begin remediation, if necessary.

MATH
Math placement exams are:
- Administered in the Testing Center on a
walk-in basis
- Given from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Thursday
- Given from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday
- Designed to allow students advance placement
into the following math courses:
Math 90, and 91
Math 100, 100A, 100B,
102, and103
The following chart outlines the different ELM
scores and corresponding math courses:
** Math 110 does not
fulfill the GE math requirement.
English course placement
is determined by EPT test scores. The following chart outlines the
different EPT scores and corresponding English courses:
* Students who are
eligible for the English 100/101 combination should call or
contact the English
