| Program
Description |
| On admission to the program,
Project SEED Scholars are integrated into active research groups
under the direction of chemistry and biochemistry faculty members
at Cal State LA. The student selects his/her research adviser
from among the faculty members in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry, and the nature and scope of the research project
is arranged to suit the student's level and interests through
consultation between the adviser and the student. The SEED Scholar's
participation in research will be full-time during the eight-week
summer. The major benefit to the SEED Scholar is the career enhancement
experienced by participation in an active research group while
the student is still in high school, an opportunity uncommon
at most universities. The Project SEED Scholars will be in a
position to interact with the best science faculty and students
at the University. |
| Financial
Support |
| The Project SEED Program is
financially supported by the American Chemical Society, the Department
of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the College of Natural and
Social Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles. Each SEED Scholar
is provided a
salary of $2,500 for participation in this eight-week
summer research program. In addition, the program provides funds for research
supplies. Participation in a second summer for 2014 is possible
with a higher stipend. |
| SEED
Scholar Selection Criteria |
Interested students will be required to submit
an application form and two letters of recommendation from their
high school chemistry, other science or mathematics teachers.
The following criteria will be used in SEED Scholar selections:
Demonstration of high academic ability
in course work. A grade point average of 3.0 or higher and good
letters of recommendation will be regarded as indicating a student
of high ability.
The student must have completed at least
one year of college preparatory high school courses in chemistry.
Significant achievement on the PSAT or
SAT exam.
Participation in science activities, such
as science clubs, other research programs, or in science fairs.
An interest in a career in the sciences
or mathematics and a desire to do independent research.
Students must be either US Citizens or legal permanent residents.

Apply |
California State University Los Angeles
and the American Chemical Society invite students who will have
completed at least one year of chemistry by the start of this
coming summer to apply for positions in its Project SEED Summer
Research Fellowships in Chemistry and Biochemistry for High School
Students. The objective of the program is to identify talented
high school students with potential for success in chemistry
and biochemistry research. Students of modest economic means
are targeted for participation. Applications must
be post-marked by April 30, 2013 for fellowship positions in the Summer of 2013.
