Bridges to the Future Programs

The Cal State LA Biomed Prep Program

Do you plan to eventually earn a Ph.D. but need to work for a year or two after receiving your undergraduate degree in science? Cal State Los Angeles is proud to introduce its Biomedical Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (BIOMED PREP) for recent graduates who need to work for a year or two before going on to graduate school. If you are at all concerned about making the transition from an undergraduate degree to a graduate program, BIOMED PREP can help.

 The Program

Recent undergraduates sometimes need to find employment immediately upon completion of their bachelor's science degree. This should not, however, deter students from continuing their education at the highest levels. The BIOMED PREP program will assist in identifying and developing the careers of talented individuals unable to pursue graduate education immediately following completion of the B.S.

Each year, a group of 6 minority students will be appointed as PREP Scholars. They will be employed as technicians by the University for one to two years while undergoing career advancement through a one to two year post-baccalaureate program at Cal State LA. PREP Scholars will work closely with Cal State LA faculty to prepare them for careers in biomedical science. An individually tailored development plan will be created for each student in concert with a faculty research preceptor and departmental Graduate Advisor. Generally, the aim is to create a support network around the scholar, including financial support, so that the Scholar can maintain successful academic development. The result is that the participants in the program will eventually enter graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. at major research institutions.

The Value of Diversity to Science

Through experimentation, scientists seek to gain an understanding of reality, and through that understanding, the ability to describe, manipulate and create. This activity progresses in proportion to the quality and novelty of the research questions posed by its practitioners. Our human uniqueness is influenced by our life histories and circumstances, allowing each of us to frame research questions-and the answers to these questions-from different perspectives. By having investigators form and answer research questions from a variety of perspectives, we can create a more thorough understanding of cellular, molecular, and physical phenomena.

The American science enterprise has been well served by the diversity of its practitioners. However, some groups in American society-notably African Americans, American Indians, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, and others-have disproportionately low participation in leadership positions in scientific fields. These populations are a largely untapped source of intellectual talent in the physical and life sciences. The BIOMED PREP is designed to keep talented individuals at the highest levels of scientific research.

 Financial Support
BIOMED PREP Scholars are hired as research technicians in the laboratories of the participating faculty mentors. These positions pay a salary of $21,000 per year, with full benefits (including health insurance). Costs associated with enrolling in courses or workshops for academic or professional development, including preparation for the Graduate Record Exam, are covered by the program. Funds are also available for the BIOMED PREP Scholar to attend professional meetings.

 How to Apply

Students must have completed an undergraduate degree in the natural or behavorial sciences within 36 months of appointment on July 1. The deadline for applications is April 25.
