Antimalarials from the Ocean: Marine Natural Products in Neglected Disease Research
Roger Linington, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, UC Santa Cruz

Natural products (NPs) continue to play an important role in human health drug discovery. More than half of todays drugs are of NP origin, and the complex and diverse scaffolds found in nature continue to offer inspiration to modern drug discovery researchers. The Linington lab is involved in the development for novel treatments for tropical infectious diseases including malaria, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, cholera and dengue fever. By isolating and culturing micro-organisms from marine sediments we have developed a unique library of natural products extracts for testing against this panel of neglected disease targets. The application of modern methods in chemistry and biochemistry are leading to new discoveries in both drug development and target identification. Recent successes from both national and international collaborative research efforts will be presented."
