The Clot Thickens: Regulation of Blood Clotting by Vascular Redox Reactions

Dr. Steven Lentz is the Director of the University of Iowa Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), which provides training for both the MD and PhD degrees. After receiving his MD and PhD in Molecular Biology from Washington University, Dr. Lentz completed clinical training in internal medicine and hematology and a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Washington University. He then joined the faculty of the University of Iowa, where he has become recognized for his research on mechanisms of blood clotting and vascular diseases. Dr. Lentz has mentored many predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees. His presentation today will outline the recent efforts of his research team to use genetically modified mouse models to define the mechanistic role of specific reversible oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions in the prothrombotic phenotype of vascular diseases caused by atherosclerosis and obesity.
