Spinal cord injury can reduce movement function but also has detrimental effects on overall health and well-being. Exercise has been shown to beneficial following spinal cord injury. For example, therapist-based and robotic-assisted treadmill training enhances functional recovery and plasticity in the spinal cord. In addition, cardiovascular health and psychological outlook are improved by exercise programs that include treadmill training. Findings from animal and human studies of spinal cord injury will be presented that illustrate the power of exercise.
