What's With All That Noise?
How effectively used sound effects can affect your affection for a film
Sunday, August 29, 2010
ABSTRACT: If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?  What is the sound of one hand clapping?  These are questions that will be completely ignored and disregarded as we dive head first into a study of the ever under-appreciated world of audio in film.  The last thing movie-goers ever notice when attending a theater presentation is the sound (unless something goes wrong!), yet the importance of quality audio is one of the most ignored facet of filmmaking.  I will present a comprehensive introduction to all the different elements of film sound, after which the evening will be topped off with the feature "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald" (titled "Radio Hour" in Japanese) - an illustrious triple-Japanese-Academy-Award-winning film about...radio.
