The Haves, have-nots, and bad hair:

Class tension in 80s cinema

Sunday, June 29, 2008

ABSTRACT: Perhaps no other era of film has exhibited class tension between the wrong side of the tracks and...whatever is on the other side of the tracks...so prominently as films from the 1980s.  This lecture will draw on the works of John Hughes and others to explore why cinema from the 1980s chose to wrestle with the timeless question of whether it is possible to bridge the class divide through true luv.  Hughes' classic "Pretty in Pink" will be screened as an example of this genre.  Implications for broader society and applications to more current times will be discussed."
