Learning how to detect patterns (such as the ABA and ABB patterns depicted below) is an important perceptual skill. By picking out patterns that are instantiated in a variety of objects, we learn to see relational structure and organization in the world.
This research examines whether patterns made up of simple objects are more salient than patterns made by complex objects. This type of matching task will help us understand whether children are more influenced by the object matches or by the relational matches.
