The Los Angeles Writing Project at California State University, Los Angeles has been a site of the California and National Writing Projects since 1999. The heart of our Writing Project is our Summer Institute where experienced teachers of writing from the surrounding area share ideas about writing instruction.

Each year the Los Angeles Writing Project (LAWP) invites outstanding teachers to become Fellows of the Los Angeles Writing Project. The participating teachers are drawn from all disciplines and all levels of instruction (Pre-K- College) in  Los Angeles. Each Fellow receives a fellowship stipend. The summer Institute meets during the month of July in a collegial setting on the Cal State LA Campus where the Fellows:

  • Examine current theory and research in the teaching of writing and literacy

  • Write extensively and join regularly in small groups to share and respond to each others writing in progress

  • Demonstrate their own approaches to the teaching of writing and critical literacy

  • Participate as colleagues in seminars and worships conducted by nationally eminent researchers, theorists and practitioners in the teaching of composition, reading and literature.

At the conclusion of the Summer Institute, the Fellows become members of the Los Angeles Writing Project staff and are thereby available as paid Teacher Consultants for inservice programs conducted throughout the regular academic year.
