Xiao-Yong Railway from Ningbo to Xiaoshan, linked to Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway, extends 147 kilometers, 66.5 kilometers of which lies inside Ningbo. Besides, there is a feeder line of 23 kilometers to Zhenhai Port Area and Zhenhai Petrochemical Refinery Corporation, and another one of 35.5 kilometers to Beilun Port Area, with the designed yearly handling capacity of 10 million tons. The 13.7-kilometer railway from Yuyao to Cixi is designed to handle 1.75 million tons a year and is linked to Xinshushan Station of the Xiao-Yong Railway. Xiao-Yong Railway is designed to pass 42.3 pairs of passenger and freight trains , handling 12 million-ton freights and 12 pairs of passenger trains a year. Xiao-Yong Double-track Railway is under full-scale construction.

Ningbo passenger Train Station is of the top class in China. The waiting hall covers an area of 5,060 square meters and can hold 2,500 passengers. Through trains from Ningbo to Hefei, Anhui were opened on April 1st,1997, and Beijing, Guangzhou, Jilin on October 1st,1998. In 1999, Ningbo Station received 4.98 million passengers, including 2.09 million of departure and 2.89 million of arrival.

As a first-class freight transport station, Ningbo North Railway Station covers 0.358 million square meters equipped with 648 stack points, 15 freight handling lines, and 16 railway lines for special purposes. It provides trainload and less-than-trainload freight service, container service, and joint water-land freight service. It also deals with the allocation, shipment, collection and distribution of goods in such cities of east Zhejiang as Ningbo, Wenzhou and Taizhou.

The target of the railway development in the 10th five-year plan: build up the Xiaoshan-Ningbo multiple track and the second track from Zhuangqiao to Ningbo. The transportation volume to be 13 pairs of passenger trains, and 13,000,000 tons cargo. Actively prepare the Beilun branch multiple track project and to finish the first stage of Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou railway.
