Importer asks for sole agency

April 10, 19..

Dear Sirs,
We have a well developed sales organization in Tanzania and are represented by a large staff in various parts of the country. From their reports, it seems clear that there is a good demand for your textiles and as we believe you are not directly represented in Tanzania, we are writing to offer our service as your sole agent.
There are good prospects of a very profitable market for your manufactures. Provided terms could be arranged, we think our 15 years' experience in these goods should enable us to work up a very satisfactory business with you.
In view of the wide connections which we are fortunate enough to possess, we think you will agree that a 5 percent commission on net sales is quite reasonable. We are also prepared to guarantee payment of all accounts, for which we should require a Del Credere commission of 2.5 percent.
You will naturally wish to have information about us. For this we refer you to the Barminster Bank, Dar es Salaam and to Messrs. Smith, Wilson & Co., Ltd., Liverpool, who have consented to answer your inquiries as to our financial standing and so on.
We hope to hear favourably from you and feel sure that we could come to an agreement as to terms.

   Yours sincerely

Expecting a personal negotiation for an agency agreement

July 28, 19..

Dear Sirs,
We duly received your letter of the 15th July, and after careful consideration of the contents, we are favourably impressed with your proposal to act as our agent.
We have already been in treaty with several firms, but at present have come to no decision on the matter. However, if terms could be arranged, we think you would be just the people we should like to represent us. We believe you have good connections throughout the trade, and it seems to us a favourable opportunity to further develop the business which we have been doing among the class of buyers you mention.
Of course, the whole matter hinges upon the question of the amount of commission you would require on orders obtained and executed and, as your Mr. Wilson Horlake intends visiting Shanghai in a fortnight's time, we think we should prefer to discuss the various points with him personally, instead of stating general conditions and terms which would probably have to be modified or withdrawn after an interview.
We shall, therefore, await Mr. Horlake's call.

   Yours sincerely

Declining a request for sole agency

July 25, 19..

Dear Sirs,
We thank you for your inquiry regarding the sole agency for the sale of our embroideries in Sweden.
After serious consideration, we think that it would be premature to commit ourselves at this stage when the record of transactions shows only a moderate volume of business.
Please do not misinterpret the above remark, which in no way implies dissatisfaction. As a matter of fact, we are quite satisfied with the amount of business you have brought us. However, we are of the opinion that a bigger turnover must be reached to justify establishing the agency.
In view of the above, we think it advisable to postpone this matter until your future sales warrant such a step. We hope that you will agree with us on this point and continue to give us your cooperation.

   Yours sincerely
