The NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program provides institutions with funds for student scholarships to encourage and enable academically talented but financially needy students to enter the workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree in fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The program was established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in accordance with the American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act of 1998 (P.L. 105-277) as modified by P.L. 106-313 and P.L.108-447 in 2004. The Act reflects the national need to increase substantially the number of American scientists and engineers.
CSULA - AERO INSTITUTE COOPERATIVE
The purpose of this proposed program is to obtain four-year funding to support graduate students who will complete a master of science degree in Electrical, Computer, and Mechanical Engineering at CSULA. The ultimate goal of this S-STEM Project is to supply 25 highly- trained, graduate-level engineers to the aerospace industry of Urban Los Angeles and the Antelope Valley and to perpetuate a graduate student pipeline that supports the Mission of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at CSULA and the goals of the AERO Institute.
CSULA is a designated Hispanic Serving and Minority Institution located in one of the most ethnically diverse regions of the country. The AERO Institute is a unique collaboration between the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, the California Space Grant Foundation and the City of Palmdale. The goals for this Institute are to 1) development of the aerospace workforce for the future, 2) provide comprehensive technical, undergraduate and gradate education for the Antelope Valley, 3) conduct leading edge aerospace research, 4) incubate, stimulate and commercialize new intellectual property, 5) promote aerospace science and engineering, 6) build industry partnerships.
Academically talented, financially needy, students will be identified and prepared in existing undergraduate programs while they participate in undergraduate collaborative research programs that are ongoing with AERO Institute, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, and other aerospace industry in the Antelope Valley area. CSULA is the only CSU campus with a NASA funded University Research Center (URC) which currently provides funding to pipeline undergraduate students into Masters and Doctoral degrees. Students selected for this proposed program will complete their MS degrees with a research focus in five specific areas: 1) Hypersonic technology, 2) Nanotechnology, 3) UAV systems, 4) Embedded computer systems, and 5) Machine vision technology. These areas of technology were specifically chosen because they have been identified as critical technologies for the advancement of the national technology base required to maintain the world leadership of the United States in the aerospace industry. There is a commitment and capability by the AERO Institute and by the industry in the Antelope Valley to provide additional resources to support this program.
The proposed project reflects CSULA’s tradition of bringing educational and professional-advancement opportunities to students from underrepresented minority communities, and fulfillment of these goals will be an integral part of its overall and ultimate success. The scholarships will bring significant research and educational resources to the twenty-five graduate students who will be selected for this program. It will serve as a recruiting tool for attracting talented minority students to science, mathematics, and engineering programs and will serve to improve human resource development at the Antelope Valley area. The students who participate in this program will be helped to fulfill their potential while themselves helping in research and human resource development that is vital, important, and necessary. Through the proposed internship at AERO, mentorship of experts at aerospace industry in the Antelope Valley area, and its high standard for pedagogical development, the program will accomplish its goal while simultaneously serving the underrepresented minority community that is local to CSULA.

- Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Currently Pursuing an MS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a senior with 2 quarters left in a CSULA undergraduate program and a commitment to pursuing an MS Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
