The CBE helps Stanford promote pathways for women in data science
On February 3, 2017 the College of Business and Economics (CBE) joined over 75 locations in 26 countries worldwide who livestreamed Stanford University's Women in Data Science Conference. The one day symposium highlights the data science research and accomplishments of women in academia, industry and organizations and identifies career paths for women interested in the field.
Hosted by WiDS Ambassador Dr. Ming Wang, CBE Professor of Information Systems, more than 65 students, faculty and professionals came together on a rainy Friday to watch the event and join the conversation. Cal State LA not only streamed but contributed to the event with panel and poster sessions on campus. The agenda included an interdisciplinary faculty panel session, "Research and Career Exploration in Data Science," and a student research poster session.
Faculty panel attendees learned about data science related research on campus from Information Systems Professor Jongwook Woo, Economics Assistant Professor Zhen Cui, Computer Science Assistant Professor Mohammad Pourhomayoun, and Dr. Hengchun Ye, Director of Cal State LA's NASA DIRET-STEM program. Panelists discussed recent research in the exciting fields of data analytics, big data, econometrics, satellite remote sensing data and geographic information systems.
Students held a poster session of their research showing how data science is used in real life. They demonstrated practical applications to a wide variety of subjects including factors in local business success, the health insurance marketplace, the Los Angeles County housing market, and UFO sightings.
The event highlights the CBE's focus on developing engaged leaders and commitment to campus and community engagement.
