In July the College of Business & Economics hosted its inaugural Golf with the Dean event, created as an opportunity for business students to learn two business fundamentals – the sport of golf and the art of networking. It gave CBE alumni and the Dean the opportunity to spend time with a diverse group of current students.
Students from a variety of business majors applied and received 6 weeks of free golf lessons from Cal State LA alumnus and pro golfer Kevin Norwall at the Monterey Park Golf Club. The event concluded with a mini-tournament of foursomes on the Monterey Park course with students, alumni, Director of Development, Denise Gutierrez and of course, Dean Goodrich.
Many of the students were new to golf. Each week Kevin taught them fundamentals including the proper swing, stance and golf etiquette to get them started. Shirali Shah, an MSIS student in the group, was excited to be introduced to the game. On the Dean’s team during the tournament, she recommended that this opportunity should be offered to more students every year. She felt the event was an ideal way to talk with professionals in a casual setting. Luis Magana, accounting major, had played before but with no formal training. The experience reignited his interest in golf. All of the attendees enjoyed the opportunity to meet students in other majors and connect with the alumni at the event.
Dean Goodrich noted “Playing golf with someone is an excellent way to get to know them. It is wonderful for me to get to know some of our students, and for them to get into the game of golf. We appreciate our alumni who sponsored the event and the lunch afterwards.
Plans are underway to continue the Golf with the Dean series during the Fall and Spring semesters. If you are interested in sponsoring a future event, please contact the CBE Director of Development Denise Gutierrez via email at email@example.com or (323)343-2814.
