Faculty Attend IBM Cognos Training; Plan to Incorporate it into Curriculum

Ms. Nancy Knight of IBM discusses the Cognos Faculty Resource Guide with attendees

Dr. Ming Wang, professor in the Department of Information Systems in the College of Business and Economics, organized and hosted an IBM Cognos Faculty Training Workshop at Cal State LA on July 16 2014. The Cognos software product suite is used for obtaining business intelligence from operations and performance data.  Eighteen instructors teaching data analytics from colleges across the southwestern U.S. participated in the workshop which was supported by ITS and the CBE.  IBM generously donated the software and training to Cal State L.A.

Dean Goodrich welcomed the attendees. In addition to Dr. Wang, David Chang and several CBE faculty, including Dr. Otto, Dr. Perez-Carballo, Dr. Sapra, Dr. Kim and Dr. Stretch-Stephenson attended the workshop with interest in incorporating the software into their curriculum.  Cognos software capabilities include interactive query and analysis; mobile reporting; active reporting; metrics and scorecarding; dashboards and data visualization.  By incorporating Cognos into course curriculum our faculty can train students on cutting edge technology used in today’s marketplace.
