Norma Roque, who has more than two decades of experience in news media, is currently a local reporter for KMEX Channel 34, Univision Communications Inc., in Los Angeles. She graduated from Cal State L.A. in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. Prior to joining the Los Angeles Univision family in 1995, Norma was a presenter, reporter, anchor, writer and producer for KFTV Channel 21, a chain affiliate of Univision in Fresno, California, where she worked for a period of six years.
Channel 21 brings fond memories for Norma, not only because she initiated her career as a reporter there, but because she worked with her now husband, Miguel Medina, who was the news director at the time. Norma has also hosted and produced several public service programs, such as Pregunte Usted, and was a co-producer for the Hablando en Serio program. Previously, she worked as a production and assignment assistant for Cara a Cara, a national program at KVEA Channel 52.
Prior to her career in television news, Norma worked for the University Times newspaper at Cal State L.A., where she earned her first award in 1988 for her outstanding work in investigative journalism. In 2014, Norma was honored as Distinguished Alumna for the College of Arts and Letters by California State University, Los Angeles.
Throughout her professional career, Norma has received numerous awards and recognitions which include 9 Emmys, four for personal and 5 for being a member of the news team KMEX 34 Univision.
Norma has also received three Golden Microphones. The first was awarded in 2000 for news reporting with Noticia de Ultima Hora, Alaska Air, and the second was awarded for best news report and entertainment, Unusual Suspects. The third was awarded in 1997 for being part of a winning news team.
However, Norma’s most heartfelt recognitions were bestowed by her native country in El Salvador. A community center located in Las Piletas, Santa Ana, was named in her honor, Casa de la Amistad Norma Roque. Also, she was given a star in the walk of fame of Juayua, Sonsonate, and officially recognized by the people and the president of El Salvador.
In addition, Norma received accolades from the Salvadorian Chamber of Commerce in California, the United States Congress, the State Assembly, the City of Los Angeles, the Social Security Department and the International Association of Salvadorian Women for her commitment to helping the Latino community through her media and communications work.
Norma is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Chicanos Journalist Association in California, Women in the Press, and the Radio and Television Arts Academy.
A native of Santa Ana, El Salvador, Norma migrated to the United States with her family in the 1980s due to the country’s civil war. Her mother Lydia Ramirez de Roque, her late father Godofredo Leon Roque Bolanos, and her seven siblings are a crucial part of her success because of their love, support and inspiration.
Norma and her husband reside in Redondo Beach. In her free time, she enjoys participating in community work, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of her cats.
