Cal State LA Safety Advisory | November 24, 2021, 7:25 p.m.

Public Safety Advisory Update 11/24/21: The LAPD has arrested a Los Angeles man who is suspected of making calls to Cal State LA threatening gun violence on campus. The man was being held Wednesday on suspicion of making criminal threats. He is not a Cal State LA student and has no known ties to the university. The man is suspected of making threatening calls to other campuses as well.

The arrest came after a collaborative investigation in which the Cal State LA Department of Public Safety worked closely with public safety officials from the other affected campuses and the LAPD.

A University operator received the anonymous calls on Tuesday. After conducting an assessment and consulting with the LAPD, the Department of Public Safety found that there was no evidence of a credible threat. DPS continued to investigate and collaborate with LAPD.

Dear University Community:

In recent weeks we have seen an increase in coyote sightings on campus and in surrounding areas. Such sightings can be common in the early morning and evening hours. We are sharing this safety advisory with important information from Environmental Health & Safety to help you protect yourself and decrease the likelihood of aggressive coyote encounters.

What to do if a coyote approaches:

Face the coyote. Never turn away.
Make yourself look large. Raise your arms, set feet apart.
Make loud noises, shout, or use noisemakers.
Shine a strong flashlight or strobe light at the coyote.
Back away slowly.
Place larger adults in front of children and pets.

What not to do:

Do not turn and run. Running away can encourage an attack.
Do not feed a coyote or leave food out for any wild animal. Most coyote attacks take place as a result of people feeding them.
Do not approach coyote dens or coyotes that have pups.
Do not cut off a coyote’s escape path.

If you witness a coyote displaying aggressive behavior, contact Public Safety at (323) 343-3700 or, if using a campus extension, at 911.

February 6, 2020, 6:40 p.m. | Cal State LA Emergency Notification Update: The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a report of a possible gas leak in Rosser Hall, Room 256, during the evening of Feb. 6. The building had been evacuated by the time fire crews arrived on scene.

Firefighters investigated and discovered no trace of any hazardous substance, no evidence of a spill or leak, and no persons ill. An all clear has been issued. Normal activities in Rosser Hall can resume.

February 6, 2020, 5:35 p.m. | Cal State LA Emergency Notification: Possible gas leak inside a classroom in Rosser Hall. Officials evacuating impacted areas. The campus remains open. Updates to follow.

November 7, 2019, 1:45 p.m. | This is an update to the Cal State LA Public Safety Advisory sent out last night.

We have found no evidence to suggest there is a credible threat to the University community.

The Department of Public Safety continues to investigate with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies.

We do not consider this threat to be credible. However, we are maintaining an increased police presence on campus as a precautionary measure.

This graffiti threat is a crime. We are investigating and we ask anyone with information to call Public Safety at (323) 343-3700.

November 6, 2019, 7:20 p.m. | Cal State LA Public Safety Advisory: Graffiti that implied a future threat was found on a campus bathroom wall. The Department of Public Safety investigates these types of incidents with the assistance of outside law enforcement agencies. After consulting with these agencies, our assessment at this time is that there is no immediate threat to the University. Campus is safe and will remain open. We will continue to investigate and we have increased police presence as an added precaution.

We are also investigating this graffiti as a crime. Anyone with information is asked to call Public Safety at (323) 343-3700. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

November 4, 2019, 3 p.m. | Advisory Update: There have been unsubstantiated and unconfirmed reports of threats to campus safety. Public Safety has no evidence that any action is planned or has taken place. The university is open.

Shortly after 5 p.m. today, a caller phoned the Annex lab and said he would come and shoot inside the building unless it was evacuated. Out of an abundance of caution, the building was cleared.

The Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident and has determined that there is no credible threat at this time.

Message from Cal State LA Public Safety: Interagency First Responder Emergency Exercise

Dear University Community:

On Wednesday, August 14, the Cal State LA Department of Public Safety will conduct its Interagency First Responder Emergency Exercise in the Biological Sciences building from 7 a.m. to noon. Participating agencies will include the Department of Public Safety, Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and several other law enforcement and fire agencies. The exercise will involve a simulated active shooter scenario in the Biological Sciences building. The main entryways to the Biological Sciences building will be closed for the duration of the exercise.

There will also be emergency management exercises to help staff from the responding agencies better coordinate a unified command in the event of a multi-agency response to a catastrophic event (earthquake, fire, explosion, etc.) at Cal State LA. The University will also be testing its Emergency Notification System by conducting a campuswide “Shelter in Place” drill to coincide with this exercise.

This exercise will result in temporary closures of Lot 4 and the walkway between Lot 4 and Lot 3, as well as a partial lane closure of Paseo Rancho Castilla just south of the Biological Sciences building to allow police and fire agencies to stage their equipment. These areas will be closed from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
