Incoming First-Time Freshman Student - admissions/enrollment requirements and deadlines:

  • Spring 2015:                         Last qualifying coursework term for Fall 2015 admissions consideration
  • March 14, 2015*:                  Final recommended test date for EPT/ELM assessment exams.

                                                      (Register for the March 14th exams by no later than 2/27/15.)

  • May 1, 2015:                        Submit the non-refundable $100.00 (USD) Enrollment Confirmation Deposit.
  • July 1, 2015:                        Sign up for mandatory New Student Orientation for new freshmen.
  • July 15, 2015+:                    Submit official, final transcript(s) and test scores (AP, SAT, ACT, CLEP, IB, etc).
  • July-August 2015:              Attend New Student Orientation and learn about fall 2015 class enrollment.
  • September 24, 2015:          Fall Quarter 2015 begins


*Due to the Early Start Summer Program, you are strongly encouraged to complete the EPT/ELM assessments by no later than March 14, 2015. Additional information about the Early Start Program will be sent in May 2015.

+Unless notified to do so, please do not send any 7th semester/partial high school transcripts to the Cal State L.A. Office of Admissions and Recruitment at this time. They will not be reviewed, and will be destroyed upon receipt.  


This offer of admission cannot be deferred to a later term. If you do not enroll for Fall 2015, and decide to attend in a future term, you will need to re-apply and resubmit the required admissions application(s) and associated application fee during the term’s application filing period. You will be held to the admission requirements and deadlines that are in effect at that time. (NOTE: Previously submitted admission applications, application fees, and associated documents are non-transferrable. Academic records received by the University will not be returned to you.)

Lastly, the University uses email and your GET student portal as primary methods of communication with students. To ensure a smooth transition to the University, please regularly check your email (including junk email box) and GET Self-Service Center To do list, and comply with all requests. Failure to do so may lead to missed deadlines and requirements, which may negatively affect your admission and enrollment in the University.

First-time Freshman Admissions Eligibility Requirements

By the end of the last qualifying coursework term for admissions, applicants must:

  • Complete all required A-G college preparatory high school classes with grades of ‘C’ or better in each;
  • Have a minimum 2.00 high school GPA, and qualifying eligibility index, based on the combination of your high school GPA (using grades earned in the last three years of high school) and your test score on the ACT or SAT Reasoning Test;
  • Graduate from high school (and if from a California Public HS, successful passage of the CAHSEE); and
  • If applicable, regardless of residency, English Proficiency Requirement – if you have not attended a high school/secondary level educational institution where English was the principal language of instruction for at least three years full time, or have not completed a transferable college-level English Composition course from a United States post-secondary institution, with a grade of 'C' or better, you must obtain a minimum English Proficiency Exam score as follows:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):  61 ibt or higher
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic:  44 or higher
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS):  Band 5.5 or higher

English Placement Test (EPT)/Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) Exams

Unless exempt, all new students must take the English (EPT) and Math (ELM) placement tests prior to enrolling in classes. For exemption methods, please visit:

It is strongly recommended that you take the EPT/ELM as soon as possible, by no later than March 14, 2015. (NOTE: For the 3/14/15 exam date, please register by 2/27/15.) To register for the EPT/ELM exams, please visit https://ept-elm.ets.org/CSU/. EPT/ELM testing registration deadlines are two weeks before the posted test date. Enrollment Confirmation Deposit

To accept this offer of admission, a non-refundable, non-transferrable Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) of $100 (USD) is required of all newly admitted/returning undergraduate students who plan to enroll at Cal State L.A.. The deposit will be applied to your first term’s tuition and fees, and must be submitted by May 1, 2015 to confirm your planned enrollment at the University.

ECD payment methods:

  • Online (Credit card (no VISA), debit card, and electronic check payments) - CASHNet Smartpay at https://commerce.cashnet.com/csulapay. Select “Enrollment Deposit-Fall 2015” for payment type. (A nominal service charge will apply.)
  • In Person (Cash, check, or money order only) - Visit the Cashier’s Office in Administration 128. Office hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please have CIN (campus ID number) available and notify Cashier that you are making a Fall 2015 ECD payment.

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by The Board of Trustees.

New Student Orientation Program

All new freshmen are required to attend a Fall 2015 New Student Orientation program. Information about Orientation will be sent to students whom have submitted their ECD, beginning in June 2015. After receiving the information, please sign up for an Orientation program by July 1, 2015. Transcripts (and if applicable, Test Scores (AP, IB, CLEP, SAT, ACT, etc.))

If you have not done so already, please submit official, final high school and college transcripts (and, if applicable, official test scores), by July 15, 2015. To be considered final, the transcript must include courses/grades completed through Spring 2015, and your high school graduation date.

If you took courses at a college/university prior to high school graduation, we also require an official transcript from every institution attended, regardless if an institution's courses are also reported on another institution's transcript. We accept electronic transcripts from the following community colleges: East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Trade Tech, and Los Angeles Valley College. (NOTE: If you take Summer 2015 college courses, you must submit another set of final transcript(s) with summer grades posted, by October 9, 2015.)

To be considered official, transcripts must be sealed by the issuing institution, and have an issue date within one year (for United States institutions) or two years (for foreign institutions), of the date it is received by Cal State L.A.  (NOTE: Previously submitted transcripts for other terms are not kept by the University. All documents must be resubmitted for each new application term.)
