Professor Enrique Berumen, an East Los native, has a B.A. in Creative Writing (Honors) from UC Santa Cruz and a Master’s of Fine Arts in screenwriting from USC’s Cinema-TV School. He was a member of Gabriel García Marquez’s writing workshop at the Sundance Institute and a Gary Hendler Screenwriting Fellow at the American Film Institute. For three years, he served as an Artist-in-Residence for the California Arts Council. His feature-length script Requiem For A Bantamweight garnered fellowships in 2015 for the CineStory retreat and the Cinefilia Script Lab in Medellin, Colombia. His documentary-in-progress, Cubana 455, is a recipient of a Paul Robeson Independent Media Grant. Since 1997, Enrique has taught screenwriting, as well as, critical studies courses, at the Department of Television, Film and Media Studies at California State University, Los Angeles.
