Program Information Guidelines
The Orientation and Mobility Specialist Training Program encourages qualified Minority
Group Members to apply and in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
existence of a physical disability does not disqualify one from considerations for program
admission.
Orientation and mobility for visually impaired persons is a dynamic discipline. The CSULA
Orientation and Mobility Training Program seeks instructor candidates possessing
intelligence, common sense, sensitivity, insight, flexibility, creativity, dedication to
teaching a wide range of students, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
All applicants to the Orientation and Mobility Specialist Training Program must complete a
program application, an in-person interview, and a minimum of one field observation of a
practicing Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Successful prior employment, volunteer
service or personal experience with individuals who are visually impaired is preferred, but
not essential. Due to the highly specialized nature of the program and intensive training
resources required, there are a limited number of program openings each year.
Our goal is to meet the needs of the culturally diverse population that we serve. In our
attempts to effectively address this goal we have identified a great demand for bilingual
Orientation and Mobility Specialists
Candidates for the Orientation and Mobility Specialist Training Program are typically
considered for admission in the Summer and Fall Quarter. While there is no strict
application deadline, the program begins accepting applications in November for admission
the following Fall Quarter. Federal grant support (when available) for this program
requires that trainee recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA, carry a minimum courseload of 12 units
each quarter, and plan a course of study resulting in completion of the MA program in four
consecutive academic quarters.
