Internship, Scholarship, Conference, & Job Opportunities

Internship Announcements

Students can participate in an internship by enrolling for Soc 398 or Soc 498, and they can earn up to a maximum of 8 units of elective credit for their sociology degree. To be approved for an internship, students should have completed at least three upper division courses in sociology, arrange a work agreement with an approved agency, and be willing to commit the equivalent of 30 hours of agency work for each unit of credit they expect to receive. The intern must meet with the Department's Internship Coordinator during the quarter, and submit a journal of activities and a short final paper illustrating how sociological concepts gleaned from their sociology courses have been applied to the work setting. A list of approved agencies and other program details can be obtained from the Coordinator.  Announcements concerning potential internships are included below.  However, students should also feel free to arrange their own internship placement.

For more, contact Dr. Elaine Draper, Internship and Service Learning Coordinator.

Scholarship Opportunities in the Sociology Department

Cal State LA offers over 300 scholarships. Most are awarded to students currently enrolled, and many are given to students pursuing specific majors. Sociology awards three such scholarships: the Francesca ("Kiki") Alexander, the David Miller, and the Richard and Erika Nahrendorf.

The Sociology Department is accepting applications for its scholarships.  Required forms are below.

NOTE Submit your complete Scholarship Application by November 30 at noon to Professor Elaine Draper's faculty mail box (King Hall C-3093) and not to Financial Aid.  A complete Scholarship Application includes the original and one copy of (1) Scholarship Application form that includes the Letter of Recommendation form and an attached reference letter, (2) an essay, and (3) an academic transcript from your previous, non-CSULA, school (unofficial is OK) if you are a transfer CSULA student and your transfer coursework isn't yet on your CSULA transcript on the GET system.

University Scholarship Opportunities

To be considered automatically for all scholarships, file a General Scholarship Application along with a letter of recommendation in April of each year. Further details about specific requirements and qualifications can be obtained by contacting the Scholarship Office or the Department's Office Staff.

Conferences

Graduate and undergraduate students may participate in sociology or social science conferences.  For undergraduates, participating in a conference can be helpful in gaining admission to graduate programs.  The same is true for graduate students wishing to continue on to a PhD-level program.
