Contact hours: Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm.
Services or activities: Wide variety of programs for kids and their parents. The primary emphasis is on tutoring and mentorship but there is also a focus on education and health.
Ages and ethnicity of those served: Adolescents and their parents, most of whom are Hispanic. Many of them have been expelled and some are in gangs.
Length of minimum commitment: Flexible but prefer at least six to nine months
Hours per week: Flexible: depends on placement. Weekend and evening hours are available.
Formal training program: Yes, depends on placement. Training is done by educational counselors who come in multiple times a year.
Personal qualities of volunteers: People person, outgoing, ambitious, creative, ingenious, committed, dedicated, assertive and flexible (in order to deal with the tough and sensitive clients)
Additional requirements: TB Test. Fingerprinting for background check (which takes 2-3 weeks)
Direct supervision: Yes, volunteer will receive direct supervision as needed per week.
Supervision entails: Meeting with teachers who provide feedback
