The Department of Psychology

Diane Lewis

Psi Chi and The Psychology Association of Cal State L.A. have inducted its new officers who were elected last spring. The executive board consists of: president, Kathleen Baumann; vice president, William Concepcion; secretary Lok-Sze Wong; treasurer, Kyle Nakamoto; and faculty advisor, Dr. David Fitzpatrick.

In a drive to increase involvement of Psychology students and generate interest in association activities, the officers will be distributing surveys for student opinion regarding meetings and events of the organization. The officers plan to structure the activities to accommodate as many psychology students as possible. Survey forms and membership applications are available in the Psychology Advisement Office.

The goals and objectives for the coming years include a Back-To-School Picnic (after the GRE), field trips, information resource center for research and job opportunities, community service project, and, of course, the annual banquet which is held during the spring quarter. The executive committee would greatly appreciate your feedback, so they can better serve those students who are interested in becoming more familiar with Psychology Department resources and activities, and getting involved.

I might add that last year's banquet was held at Almansor Court in Alhambra and highlighted, much to the entertainment of the rest of us, by some of our most talented faculty guys performing to the disco classic, "YMCA," in appropriate headgear. Of course, there was also the very important induction of twenty-three new Psi Chi members who received certificates and pins -- and a handshake from our department chair, Dr. Michael Roffe. Unfortunately, our advisor, Dr. Fitzpatrick was unable to attend and we missed our annual comprehension test for off-beat humor from our resident punster. As a past officer of Psi Chi, I would also like to acknowledge the special contributions of Mary Lou Antonio (our former President's mother) without whom the decorations would have been a disaster and Pilar Vargas who secured the gorgeous flowers for the centerpieces on each table.

In closing, please feel free to leave any questions or suggestions for the officers at the Psychology Department Office, as they have a mailbox there. Also, the General Meeting for all members was held the week of October 14-16. Mark your calendar and watch the Psi Chi bulletin board next to the Advisement Office (KH-C3062), for the specific time and place.
