PSI CHI at CSULA is a chapter of the national student organization whose purpose is to serve psychology students on a local level. Our goals are to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship amongst our students, and advance the science of psychology. Our continuing efforts are aimed at nourishing and stimulating professional growth through programs designed to augment and enhance the regular curriculum and to provide practical experience and fellowship.
Here at CSULA we feel an additional obligation to maintain a Psychology Association to serve those students who are ineligible to be PSI CHI members. This was initiated to include any psychology student in departmental activities, social gatherings, or other pertinent psychology services. PSI CHI provides a student lounge where relevant information regarding conferences, conventions, scholarships, or research opportunities open to psychology students and PSI CHI members is regularly posted.
Furthermore, PSI CHI maintains a psychology library that furnishes audiovisual resources and psychological literature for the use of faculty and staff. We also encourage the formation of study groups and the use of this quiet area for studying. The library area is also convenient for accommodating special guest speakers from our own campus as well as outside the university. Qualifications for PSI CHI membership at CSULA are identical to those of the national headquarters: Completion of 5 quarters of college courses. Completion of 9 semester hours/14 quarter hours of psychology Registration for major or minor standing in psychology Overall GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates; average GPA of "B" or better for graduate students High standards of personal behavior Two-thirds affirmative vote of those present at regular chapter meetings.
Requirement for involvement in the Psychology Association is to simply be a psychology major and interested in uniting with other students of similar discipline.
Along with the national quarterly PSI CHI Newsletter, our local chapter also publishes The Looking Glass, a quarterly review of departmental activities, events, student news, editorials and essays with contributions by faculty, advisors, officers, and psychology students.
