Department of Biological Sciences
POSITION: Teaching Associate for Department of Biological Sciences in laboratory sections of courses in both Biology and Microbiology.
STARTING DATE: Beginning Fall quarter 2011 and on-going.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences. A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a Biological Science, or closely related field, from an accredited institution of higher education is required. Teaching Associates must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period. Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment, and have good oral and written communication skills.
Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should display an ease and comfort in working with students of all ethnicities. Good library research, writing, people/social skills as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate students is essential.
HIRING CRITERIA: Priority will be given to individuals who have excellent oral and written communication skills.
DUTIES: Under supervision of faculty, successful candidates will teach laboratory sections of undergraduate biology and microbiology labs. They will be required to attend weekly meetings with the lab coordinator for the class and they may be expected to attend the lecture associated with the lab that they are teaching and/or help the instructor in the proctoring of exams. The teaching associate may also be responsible for helping to clarify course material or course content for students.

SALARY RANGE: Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
