Minimum Qualifications:

A terminal degree in music from an accredited institution of higher education, or the equivalent (significant professional experience may be considered equivalent to a terminal degree). Applicant must have a record of research, scholarship, publications, and/or creative activity involving students whenever possible, and extensive college/university level teaching experience using a variety of methodologies.  Applicant must have demonstrated potential as an administrator and a demonstrated proficiency for fostering collegiality/consensus building; with a potential for implementing innovative change.  Applicant must have demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multi-ethnic multicultural environment and the ability to manage a department in which diverse musical styles are represented.

 

 

Preferred: Qualifications:

The Department of Music at California State University, Los Angeles is seeking a dynamic individual to Chair the department. The successful candidate will have significant administrative experience, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, and experience in advising students on curricular issues. Successful grant writing/fund raising experience is highly desirable. Applicant must have substantial teaching experience at the college/university level.

 

 

Duties:

The Department Chair is responsible for providing academic and curricular leadership and management for the Department of Music.  The Chair is expected to teach one class per quarter in the area of his/her expertise, mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students,  participate in research as well as University governance and community service  The Chair is responsible for the overall administration of the department, including scheduling classes, advising students, supervising clerical/technical staff, managing the budget, and representing the department in the College of Arts & Letters.  Applicant must have ability to maintain balance between professional/scholarly and pedagogical activities.  Department Chairs serve twelve (12) months initially in a three-year renewable appointment.
 

 

Salary:

Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
