Minutes of April 18, 2000 Department of Physics and Astronomy Meeting

1) announcements:
a) The upper division theme, Health and Wellness may be revived.
b) Pres. Rosser may be the acting provost?
c) Faculty recruitment request due to Dean Soltz by May 12.
d) School will provide 4 units of release time for the first quarter for new hires( tenure track).
e) School has been considering requiring a  minimum enrollment limit of 5 in the graduate classes and 10  in the undergraduate  classes.
f) Salary information is available from Gay and Sara. Please check the School's spread sheet to make sure it matches your March 1, 2000 pay stub.
g) Department's FTES for Spring 2000 is 200.13. This is an increase of about 23 compared to Spring 1999.
h) The School is proposing unit relief or GA assistance based on class size as per a table passed around at the meeting.
i) PSB remodeling not likely before 2002 due to cost over runs.
j) Minutes of the 200 series Working Group meeting from April 11, 2000 were distributed.

6) Election of Frieda Stahl Graduate Assistant Teaching Award recipient.
 m/s/p - Babacar Niang will receive the Frieda Stahl Graduate Assistant Teaching  Award this year.

7) Discussion of polling of part-time faculty and staff  by the Chair Selection Committee
m/s/p - The Department endorses the action of the current Chair Selection Committee to poll the part-time faculty and the staff in gathering information for selection of the next Department Chair.

m/s/p - The Department agrees that the current Chair Selection Committee should be allowed to seek information from any source they deem necessary to select the next Department Chair.
