Response Functions Separations and Distorted Momentum Distribution Asymmetry measured for the 4He(e,e'p) reaction at high momentum transfers

Abstract

We propose to extend the recently completed measurements of E89044 on 3He to 4He with some modifications. We wish to measure:

(I) the response functions RLT, RT, RL+RTT of the two body final state (p,t) for missing momenta out to 550 MeV/c in perpendicular kinematics. Measurements will be taken in the quasi elastic region ( xB=0.96 ) for a fixed Q2 of  1.983 GeV2.

(II) the response functions RL and RT of the two body final state (p,t) for missing momenta out to 550 MeV/c in parallel kinematics. This will be done at a fixed outgoing proton kinetic energy of 1GeV in th triton rest frame. Positive y kinematics are chosen to take advantage of the large rates, even at high Pmiss.

(III) the distorted bound nucleon momentum distribution asymmetry for the 4He(e,e'p)X reaction for missing energies out to 150 MeV and target nucleon momenta out to 550 MeV/c taken in parallel and anti-parallel kinematics. This will be done at one energy, 2.4GeV, which matches an energy in part (II) and the same outgoing proton energy.

In all cases we will take advantage of the high momentum transfers possible with the CEBAF at JLab and the concomitant high outgoing momentum possible of the detected proton ( Tp > 1 GeV). These conditions will allow final state interactions to be analyzed using the well known generalized eikonal approximation which has worked well in nucleon-nucleus scattering.
