Professor of Music in Latin Music, Jazz Studies and Piano
Paul DeCastro joined the Department of Music faculty in 1997 and coordinates the graduate degree program in Afro Latin Music and teaches studio piano. Dr. De Castro also teaches courses in Afro Latin music and jazz studies.
Dr. De Castro is recognized in jazz and salsa music circles as a versatile keyboardist, arranger and composer. Esteemed as both a fine performer and teacher, he has performed and/or recorded with a diverse group of musicians that include Gary Foster, Bobbie Bradford, Charlie Haden, Nick Brignola and Bobby Carcases in addition to numerous jazz and salsa groups in Austin TX and Los Angeles. The Jeff Benedict Project, the Stacy Rowles Sextet, the CSLA Jazz Ensembles and the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra have recorded his compositions.
Since 2006 Paul De Castro has toured Europe and Asia both as a performer and educator. As leader of Orquesta Dengue, Dr. De Castro has performed in numerous festivals in Romania and Hungary and taught master classes in Canada and Taiwan. Dr. De Castro was the Afro Cuban expert for the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) Resource Team between 2004-2006.
Paul DeCastro holds the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds the Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Los Angeles
