Each year the Department of Music awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in music. Some of the scholarships are for specific fields of study within music, such as vocal performance or composition, and other scholarships are more flexible and can be awarded to any student majoring in music. The faculty Scholarship Committee makes scholarship awards to students that most closely fit the intentions of the specific scholarship.
Scholarships in the Department of Music are funded from a variety of sources. In nearly every case, music scholarships come from the generosity of donors who wish to promote the formal study of music as preparation for a professional career in music or a music-related field. Many of the music scholarships result from the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Music, an organization that supports the music program at California State University, Los Angeles.
All music scholarships are awarded through a formal application and audition process that occurs in Winter Quarter of each year. Auditions for scholarships awarded to students for the 2010-11 academic year will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2009, and Friday, December 11, 2009. Both current and prospective students may apply and audition for a scholarship.
