Graduate choral conducting at California State University, Los Angeles provides students with the study gestural language, literature, historic style analysis and organizational management. The choral conducting faculty are well-known conductors and educators who work in the professional fields of concert performance, festival adjudication and scholarship.
Students in choral conducting have the opportunity to pursue the Masters of Music degree in both regular session classes (Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters) and in a special sessions program (Summer Quarter), The special sessions program , the “Three-Summer Master of Music in Choral Conducting.” is administrated by the Division of Extended Education and directed by Dr. William Belan. In three seven-week sessions most of the coursework for the degree is completed. The regular sessions program and the summer program are not blended, therefore one must decide to participate in only one of the programs.
Students have the opportunity to participate in activities of the Roger Wagner Center for Choral Studies, a chartered center of the university. The Roger Wagner Center offers scholarships for the study of choral art and sponsors special workshops and events. Students may be involved in all of the Center’s activities.
Performance opportunities on campus are numerous and include small ensembles, larger choral ensembles, opera, musical productions and master classes featuring prominent guest artists. Our students often find performance opportunities with the many professional and community choral ensembles and church choirs in the area.
