Dr. Thomas Miyake

Faculty: Choral Studies, Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education


Dr. Thomas M. Miyake is a Professor of Music at California State University, Los Angeles. He also supervises the music education program and teaches various undergraduate and graduate music classes. A Colorado native, he earned bachelor and master's degrees at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, and a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.

Prior to coming to California in 1988, he taught four years at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. His career also includes 17 years at Overland high School and Cherry Creek High School in metropolitan Denver, Colorado, where he was the coordinator and choral director. While there he received the Colorado Award for Outstanding Teacher. His choirs were frequently selected for state and regional MENC Conventions. He founded and directed the Cherry Creek Chorale, held directorships at three Denver churches and was the administrative director for the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park Colorado. He conducted the Colorado All State Choir, the Southern California Women's Honor Choir, the Heartland Honor Choir and has served in the role of clinician or adjudicator throughout the United States. His choirs have toured the U.S., Europe, Mexico and Japan.

In addition to his duties at Cal State Los Angeles, he presently serves as the Director of Music at Diamond Bar United Congregational Church. Five years ago he founded the San Gabriel Valley Choral Company (SGVCC), a chorale located in Monrovia. The SGVCC was selected to perform for the 1999 California Music Educators/American Choral Directors Convention. He has been listed in Who's Who in Music and Who's Who Among Colleges and Universities.
