Dale Carter has been a member of the faculty of California State University, Los Angeles since 1966, serving as Department Chair from 1988-94. In addition to having served on virtually every major committee from the department to the university levels, he was a member of the Academic Senate for nine years and the Senate Executive Committee for seven. He served one term as Senate Secretary and was the founding editor of the Senate Newsletter.
In addition to his university service, Professor Carter was President of the Foreign Language Council of the California State University (1991-93) and Chair of the Panel appointed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to revise the standards for teacher credentialing programs in languages other than English (1990-95).
In recognition of his accomplishments in teaching, research, and service, Professor Carter was named Outstanding Professor by California State University, Los Angeles in 1989 and was awarded the Orden de los Descubridores by Sigma Delta Pi, the national Spanish honorary society in 1992.

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND REPRESENTATIVE PUBLICATIONS
Professor Carter's primary research interests are in the areas of the Spanish-American novel and short story. He is an internationally recognized expert in the work of Julio Cortázar. In addition, he has focused his attention in recent years upon literary translation, publishing a novel and numerous short stories, both in journals and as separate volumes. His translations of two plays by major Spanish-American authors were presented in English by the Cal-State, Los Angeles Teatro Universitario en Español.
