Strategic Language Initiative Korean Program
Mission Statement
The Strategic Language Initiative (SLI) Korean program provides selected students with the opportunity with scholarship to study Korean language and culture over a period of 15 months. Educational opportunities include:
- Six-week, non-residential, and semi-immersion summer program in Korean that includes 300 minutes/day of Korean language and culture instruction, two 90-minute Lab sessions/day, and a 50-minute lunch session/day Monday through Thursday, as well as a 5-hour excursion on Friday.
- Online and face-to-face instruction with occasional field trips led by the main instructor and three graduate assistants during the three quarters following the summer program
- Four-week summer study abroad program at Korea University, Seoul, Korea.
Program Goals
Short term:
Summer intensive program - to enhance the students’ Korean language proficiency and cultural knowledge for one level (from 1 plus to 2 in the case of non-heritage speakers, and from 2 to 2 plus in the case of heritage speakers) through instruction and other activities on campus as well as excursions that offer opportunities to practice Korean and deepen their knowledge of Korean culture and society in real world situations.
Online and face-to-face instruction and summer study abroad – to enhance the students’ Korean language proficiency and cultural knowledge for one level (from 2 to 2+ in the case of non-heritage speakers, and from 2 plus to 3 in the case of heritage speakers) through three quarters of instruction with occasional field trips and summer study abroad that offers opportunities to practice Korean and deepen their knowledge of Korean culture and society in real world situations.
Long term:
To prepare the students to further study Korean, to use Korean in their discipline, or to explore job opportunities using Korean.

California State University, Los Angeles is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for intensive summer Korean program for summer 2009. SLI Korean Scholarship provides six week intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences at the intermediate level. The Summer Intensive Korean Program at Cal State L.A. is a highly competitive six-week, non-residential and semi-immersion program designed to provide selected students with the opportunity to develop professional language skills that are currently much in demand for professional careers. The participants in this program are expected to use their own financial means to take our Advanced-level Korean courses throughout the 2009-10 academic year (Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters). Those who complete the Advanced-level instruction will have an opportunity to be selected to participate in the study abroad program in South Korea in Summer 2010 with scholarship.

| Curriculum Information: | Students will spend six weeks in intensive language learning, involving six hours per day in three segments of a 12-unit class and 2 hours in language labs. Moreover, they will have access to on-line materials and project-based learning during the lab hours. They will also have a language table with a language tutor during lunch time. Students will participate in a variety of cultural enrichment activities. These cultural activities are an essential component of the language acquisition process and attendance is mandatory. Students will be required to attend all program activities, including classroom instruction and cultural excursions. Absences will only be excused for medical reasons or family emergency. |
| Eligibility: | -18 years of age or older on June 29, 2009 -A minimum GPA of 3.0 -Heritage or non-heritage Korean learners who have sufficient proficiency to be placed at the intermediate-level instruction -Good academic and social standing * Priority is given to current CSU students followed by those from California community colleges and Universities of California |
APPLICATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA: Since there are limited spaces for this program, the selection process is competitive. Initial screening is based on a completed application, transcripts from previous high school (freshman) or college work, and a letter of recommendation. Finalists will take oral and written tests in Korean, and have an interview in English.

From 2007, California State University, Los Angeles has taken charge of the federally-funded Korean program, which is part of the California State University Consortium for the Strategic Language Initiative (SLI) that is designed to provide selected students with the opportunity to develop professional language skills that are currently much in demand for professional careers.
