Welcome - Accessing Knowledge Resources - CSLA Campus Website on Information Competence

WELCOME! This is the Accessing Knowledge Resources Section of the CSLA Website on Information Competency. In this Section, we will expose you to guides, tutorials and other teaching material whose purpose is to help you learn six of the ten CSU Basic Information Competency Skills.

Because information competency is an integrated process, one cannot learn one part without also dealing, at least briefly, with the other skills to which it relates. For example: one cannot access knowledge resources if one has not first competently defined the research topic, and determined its information requirements; and after information has been accessed, one cannot determine if the retrieved information is relevant, unless one applies competent evalution skills.

Here are the six information competency skills, which form the focus of this Accessing Knowledge Resources Section.

Define the Research Topic
These skills will be covered briefly, especially as they relate to locating and retrieving relevant information.

Determine the Information Requirements for the Research Question
These skills will be covered briefly, especially as they relate to locating and retrieving relevant information.

Locate and Retrieve Relevant Information
These skills forms the MAJOR FOCUS of this Section of our Website. It will be handled in greater depth than the other skills which integrate with it.

Evaluate Information
These skills will be covered briefly, especially as they relate to locating and retrieving relevant information.

Understand the Ethical, Legal, and Socio-Political Issues Surrounding Information and Information Technology
These skills will be covered briefly, especially as they relate to locating and retrieving relevant information.

Use, Evaluate, and Treat Critically Information Received From the Mass Media
These skills will be covered briefly, especially as they relate to locating and retrieving relevant information.
