History is offered in programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. Also offered are minors in History and in Religious Studies which are valuable for students majoring in other fields. The department shares responsibility for the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science, which leads to the Single Subject credential in Social Science for those planning to teach in public schools at the secondary level.

Graduate study leading to the Master of Arts degree in History affords the opportunity for intensive study in selected fields of history. The program can serve such distinctly different goals as preparation for teaching in a community college, building the foundation for entry into doctoral study, and broadening one's knowledge and understanding of the human experience. The program places emphasis upon discussion-type graduate seminars, supported by selected course work, preparation of research papers, and extensive directed reading. Our students regularly are admitted to doctoral programs at major universities throughout the United States and pursue successful careers in education, government service, and business.

A number of Scholarships are available to qualified History majors. Those who qualify may join the campus' Eta Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history. The department also publishes a scholarly journal, Perspectives: A Journal of History.
