Undergraduate Program
Admission to the School of Nursing BSN program is a two part process. Students must apply to the University thru the Office of Admissions and complete the School of Nursing application. To apply to the university go to www.csumentor.edu
All undergraduate nursing students must have completed the following prerequisites or their equivalents before taking their first nursing class:
BIOL 200A & 200B Human Anatomy & Physiology minimum 4 Sem/5Qtr Units each
CHEM 151 Fundamentals of Chemistry (inorganic chemistry) minimum 4 Sem/5 Qtr Units
ENGL 101 Composition minimum 3 Sem/4 Qtr Units
PSY 150 Introductory Psychology minimum 3 Sem/4 Qtr Units
Critical Thinking (PHIL 160 or PHIL 250 or POLS 155 or COMM 176) minimum 3 Sem/4 Qtr Units COMM 150 Public Speaking minimum 3 Sem/4 Qtr Units
MICRO 201, 202 Microbiology with lab minimum 4 Sem/6 Qtr Units
Sociology 201 and NTRS 250 or 317 (4 qtr units each) are prerequisites for the first quarter of Nursing but not for admission.
STUDENTS WHO ALREADY HAVE A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN ANOTHER FIELD WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN FALL 2010

BSN Undergraduate Application
RN-BSN Program
In addition to having a current California RN license, the School of Nursing at CSULA will be implementing a new two step RN to BSN admission process beginning the end of September 2009. Students must apply to both the university and the School of Nursing The application will consist of: formal transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, letters of recommendation (one or two from current employer and one from a clinical instructor), and completion of an essay to assess writing skills. Once the completed application is received you will be considered for the fall 2010 cohort. Applicants will be evaluated according to overall GPA, feedback from reference letters, and writing ability. All students must complete the eight prerequisites (or equivalent of): English 101, Speech, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Psychology, and Critical Thinking prior to admission.

Graduate Programs
Admission to the graduate program is a two-step application process.
- Application to the university seeking status as a Conditionally-Classified graduate student. To apply to the university go to www.csumentor.edu
- Submission of applications materials to the School of Nursing.
Applicants must be admitted to the university as a Conditionally-Classified graduate student and be approved by the School of Nursing admissions program coordinator.

Application Deadlines
NEW GRADUATE SCHOOL OF NURSING APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FALL 2010, FEBRUARY 1, 2010
Applications are not accepted for the winter, spring and summer quarters.
The following material must be submitted along with the application:
- Two professional references: one from a supervisor and another from a supervisor or past university instructor.
- A typed essay highlighting professional goals, reason for expanding your professional role to become an advanced practice nurse, and examples that illustrate your ability and potential for working as an advanced practice nurse. (maximum two pages).
- One set of Official Transcripts (all universities and colleges attended) mailed directly to the Nurse Practitioner Program Office.
- A copy of Current California Registered Nurse License.
All MSN applicants must fulfill the following prerequisites and criteria:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited (NLN or CCNE) program
- Minimum B (3.0) grade point average in upper division nursing courses or permission of the School of Nursing Graduate Studies Committee
- Minimum 2.75 grade point average in the last 90 quarter units of attempted course work
- Completion of Math 220 or equivalent
- Completion of an inferential statistics course – HHS 400 or equivalent (course must include inferential statistical content)
- Completion of an upper division nursing research course – NURS 490 or equivalent
- Recent physical assessment course for all nurse practitioner applicants (within the last 5 years)
- Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in California
- Obtain California State University, Los Angeles liability insurance, regardless of whether the applicant carries personal professional liability coverage. Some clinical agencies may require additional professional malpractice insurance for nurse practitioner students.
- Have a cleared criminal background check once admitted. Additional drug testing may be required by some clinical agencies.

Entry Level Masters Program
The Application period for the ELMN Program is currently pending. Please check back periodically for updates.
Application Deadlines
The Program is offered Summer Quarter only (the application period will be from Monday, November 2nd to Thursday, January 14th for our summer 2010 ELMN program. Applications received or postmarked after January 14th will not be accepted).
NOTE: Please continue to check website to get any updated changes re to admission dates for Summer 2010. CSULA is considering summer campus closure due to the budget crisis. At this writing, we are not sure how this will impact this program.
ELMN Program Application
Applications are not accepted for the fall, winter, and spring quarters.
All ELMN applicants must have completed the following prerequisites or their equivalents to be considered for the ELMN program:
All prerequisite courses must be completed with at least a “C” grade or higher, with the exception of the science pre-requisite courses which must be completed with a “B” grade or higher.
- Human Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 200 A&B, CSULA)
- Microbiology with Lab (MICRO 201& 202, CSULA)
- Chemistry (CHEM 151, CSULA)
- English Composition (ENGL 101, CSULA)
- Speech (COMM 150, CSULA)
Human Growth and Development (PSY 160, CSULA – Lifespan psychology course covering birth to later life)
- Intro to Sociology or Cultural Anthropology, or Equivalent (SOC 201 or ANTH 250, CSULA)
- Human Nutrition (NTRS 250 or 317, CSULA)
- Inferential statistics (Math 274, CSULA or Equivalent )
- Critical Thinking (COMM 176, ENGL 102 or Equivalent)
- In addition all applicants must are required to be computer literate, and must be able to use word processing, email, and data search programs
- International students must take the TOEFL exam within the year preceding the application deadline and submit the results along with their application materials. In addition, any international transcripts must be interpreted by an accredited international translation agency, which is to include a GPA as a part of the interpretation report.
- All four science pre-requisite courses must be completed by the end of the preceding fall the quarter/semester in order to apply for the summer ELMN program.

- Any other pre-requisites aside from the sciences that are NOT completed by the end of fall must be discussed with the ELMN program coordinator. If an approval to apply is granted by the ELMN program coordinator, proof of concurrent enrollment of the remaining pre-requisite(s) will be required. Documentation of successful completion of the remaining pre-requisite(s) must be received before the beginning of June. Priority for admission may be granted to those who have already completed all of their required courses.
- If any applicants would like verification that their application materials have been received by the school of nursing- ELMN program, they should enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard along with their application materials.
- We expect to admit only 20 students, once a year. A mandatory orientation day will take place, typically on the first Saturday in May. Accepted students will be expected to provide an American Heart Association BLS health care provider CPR certification card and documentation of immunization records prior to starting the program.
- The ELMN program requires full time study for at least the first five quarters. Each quarter, you will be taking two or more lecture courses and one or more laboratory courses. You must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher while in the ELMN program.
- Students accepted to this program will be admitted as conditionally classified graduate students. Successful completion of the 76 units of basic nursing courses and passing the NCLEX examination for RN licensure is required prior to changing from conditionally classified to classified graduate student status.
- Admission decisions will be communicated to all applicants via their e-mail address by Friday, April 2nd. Final admission is dependent on acceptance to the university and calculation of the GPA in your last 90 quarter units by the Office of Admissions.
The following materials must be submitted along with the application:
- An official transcript awarding a Bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher. Transcripts must also show a strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter units or 60 semester units. In addition, a grade of “B” or higher is required in all four science pre-requisite courses.
- Completion of entrance examination-TEAS- Test of Essential Academic Skills. Application this exam will be a part of the ELMN application (CSULA will be a test site on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th), but arrangements can be made to take it elsewhere. It will be the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the TEAS results are received by CSULA’s school of nursing ELMN program. Information about the exam itself can be found on the organization’s website atitesting.org. In regards to scoring, your national percentile rank should be 70% or higher in all four categories. For the 2010 ELMN program, the TEAS test may only be taken between August 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010. The test may be taken a maximum of two times, and there must be at least a three month time period between test taking dates.
- If you have taken the examination elsewhere you must send a copy of your scores to the CSULA ELMN program along with your application.
- A typed essay (NO more than two double-spaced pages) highlighting professional goals: including your reason for entering the nursing profession and qualifications to do so.
- Two recent letters of recommendation on official letterhead (Academic or Work related). It is recommended that at least one letter be from a previous professor. The writer should address your academic ability and characteristics that qualify you for the program and the nursing profession.
- An interview may be requested.
- Non-RN health care experience is strongly encouraged.
